How much sand do I need for a 15 ft above-ground pool?
A 15 ft round above-ground pool needs about 1.09 cubic yards of mason sand for a 2-inch bed, roughly 1.47 tons, or 59 bags of 50 lb, before any sand cove (which some makers forbid).
How to work it out
- Area: 3.1416 × (15 ft ÷ 2)² = 177 sq ft
- Bed: 176.7 sq ft × 2 in ÷ 12 = 29.5 cu ft
- Total: 29.5 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.09 cu yd × 100 lb per cu ft = 2,945 lb = 1.47 tons
- Bags: 2,945 lb ÷ 50 lb = 59 bags
A 15 ft round pool has a base of about 177 sq ft, and its sand is a job most people do with bags: under two tons, delivered on a pallet or picked up over a couple of trips.

- Use mason (masonry) sand: Swimline’s instructions say not to use beach or play sand. Rake it level and tamp it before the liner goes in.

Sand for a small round pool
On a 15 ft pool the cove is a bigger share of the sand than on larger pools, because the wall is long relative to the floor: a sand cove would add about 6 cubic feet to the bed’s 29. That makes the cove decision matter more. If your pool’s manual asks for a foam cove or packed earth instead of sand, the count drops to about 59 bags.
- Bed: about 29 cubic feet at 2 in, raked level inside the bottom track.
- Clear a margin: Swimline’s instructions say to clear grass and roots for 1 ft beyond the pool, so plan the cleared circle at about 17 ft.
- Frame and easy-set pools. Many 15 ft pools are one of these, and their manuals give their own base instructions; read yours first and buy sand only if it asks for it.
- Spare bags: a couple of extra bags covers spills and lets you top up low spots after you tamp.
