Pool salt calculator: how many bags of salt?
Salt chlorine generators need the water kept in a salt range set by the cell’s maker. Enter your pool volume, your salt test and the target from your cell’s manual.
Enter your measurements
- Bags
- 7 bags · 40 lb bag
- Salt rise
- 3,200 ppm
- Salt per 1,000 ppm in this pool
- 83.45 lb (1,335 oz)
In short: the salt to add is the rise you want times the weight of the water in your pool.
Rise: 3,200 − 0 = 3,200 ppm
10,000 gal × 8.345 lb per gal × 3,200 ÷ 1,000,000 = 267 lb
267 lb ÷ 40 lb per bag = 6.68 → 7 bags
- Add pool-grade salt (high-purity sodium chloride, no anti-caking agents or iodine), spread it over the shallow end with the pump running, and brush it until it dissolves. Follow your cell’s manual for start-up and for how long to wait before reading salt.
- Salt never evaporates; it leaves only with water (splash-out, backwash, rain overflow). Liquid chlorine and bleach add about 1.65 ppm of salt per ppm of chlorine used, so overshooting is easy and undoing it means draining.

| 3,000 ppm | 17 lb | 1 bag |
A salt chlorine generator (salt cell) turns dissolved salt into chlorine. It doesn’t use the salt up — the chlorine turns back into salt after it has done its job — so you add a big load once, then small top-ups when water leaves the pool. Too little and the cell stops; too much and there is no easy way to take it out.
How much salt: the formula
pounds of salt = gallons × 8.345 × ppm rise ÷ 1,000,000 kilograms = litres × ppm rise ÷ 1,000,000 bags = pounds ÷ bag size
A US gallon of water weighs about 8.345 lb, so 1 ppm in 10,000 gallons is 0.0834 lb. Raising 10,000 gallons by 3,200 ppm takes about 267 lb. Pentair’s IntelliChlor manual checks out against the same arithmetic: it lists 300 lb per 10,000 gallons to go from zero to its 3,600 ppm ideal.
Salt by pool size (from fresh water)
| Pool | To 3,200 ppm | 40 lb bags | To 3,600 ppm | 40 lb bags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 gal | 134 lb | 4 | 150 lb | 4 |
| 10,000 gal | 267 lb | 7 | 300 lb | 8 |
| 15,000 gal | 401 lb | 11 | 451 lb | 12 |
| 20,000 gal | 534 lb | 14 | 601 lb | 16 |
| 25,000 gal | 668 lb | 17 | 751 lb | 19 |
| 30,000 gal | 801 lb | 21 | 901 lb | 23 |

What salt level should a pool have?
- Hayward AquaRite: ideal 2,700–3,400 ppm, 3,200 ppm optimal (newer S3 models allow a wider operating range but keep 3,200 as optimal).
- Pentair IntelliChlor Plus / LT: 3,600 ppm ideal, 2,600–4,500 ppm range, with an “add salt” warning below 3,000 ppm.
- Other makers: check the manual — targets differ, and the cell’s warranty assumes you followed its numbers.
- Taste: pool salt water is far less salty than the sea, so most people barely notice it.
Adding salt
- Test salt with strips (cell readings drift as the cell ages), and check the cell’s manual for start-up steps.
- Add about three-quarters of the calculated salt first if you aren’t sure of your volume. You can always add more; taking salt out means draining.
- Pour it around the shallow end with the pump running and brush it toward the main drain until it dissolves. Don’t pour it in the skimmer.
- Wait for the salt to mix through (the manual says how long), retest, then top up.
Salt water pools still need stabilizer and pH control: cells tend to push pH up, and most run 60–80 ppm of CYA — see salt water pool basics. Overshot the salt? The drain and refill calculator shows how much water to replace, worked through on how much water to drain to lower salt.

High-purity sodium chloride made for salt chlorine generators. Avoid salt with anti-caking agents or iodine.

Check salt independently of the salt cell’s own reading, which drifts as the cell ages.

A drop-count kit reads free chlorine to 0.5 ppm (or 0.2 ppm), plus pH, alkalinity, calcium and stabilizer. Every dose on this site starts from a test, so this is the one thing worth buying first.

Frequently asked questions
How many bags of salt do I need for my pool?
From fresh water to 3,200 ppm, about 267 lb per 10,000 gallons — seven 40 lb bags. To 3,600 ppm it is 300 lb, eight bags. Scale by your gallons ÷ 10,000.
How much salt raises a pool by 1,000 ppm?
About 83 lb per 10,000 gallons (10,000 × 8.34 × 1,000 ÷ 1,000,000), roughly two 40 lb bags. In litres: 1 kg per 1,000 litres raises salt by 1,000 ppm.
Can I use water softener salt in my pool?
Plain, high-purity sodium chloride pellets or crystals without additives are the same chemical, but avoid anything with rust removers, anti-caking agents or iodine. Pool-labelled salt is the safe choice; check your cell’s manual.
How do I lower salt in a pool?
Only by replacing water. To go from 4,000 to 3,200 ppm with fresh fill water, replace about 20% of the pool. See how much water to drain to lower salt.
Does a salt water pool need chlorine?
The cell makes the chlorine, so you rarely add it — except to shock, when liquid chlorine raises it faster than a cell can. Keep testing free chlorine as you would in any pool.
