Hot tub gallons calculator
Seats, footwells and thick insulated walls take up most of a hot tub’s box, so you can’t just multiply length × width × depth. This estimate is fitted to the capacities hot tub makers publish.

- Likely range
- 295 gal – 372 gal
- Outside footprint
- 49 sq ft
- Published tubs about this size
- Caldera Tarino 310 gal; Hot Spring Rhythm 330 gal; Hot Spring Flair 335 gal; Hot Spring Relay 340 gal
Outside footprint: 49 sq ft
Fit through 18 published tubs: 10.9 × 49 sq ft − 200 = 334 gal
Published tubs miss that line by up to 12%: 295 gal – 372 gal
- The spec sheet or manual is the best source. Some makers list two figures — to the fill line and to the brim — and the fill-line number is the one to dose with.
Quick answers for common sizes
| Example | Answer |
|---|---|
| How many gallons in a 7x7 hot tub | 334 gal |
| How many gallons in a 6x6 hot tub | 260 gal |
| How many gallons in an 8x8 hot tub | 454 gal |
Estimated gallons by size (square tubs)
| Size | Estimated gallons | Likely range |
|---|---|---|
| 6 × 6 ft | 192 gal | 170 gal – 214 gal |
| 6.5 × 6.5 ft | 260 gal | 230 gal – 290 gal |
| 7 × 7 ft | 334 gal | 295 gal – 372 gal |
| 7.5 × 7.5 ft | 413 gal | 365 gal – 461 gal |
| 8 × 8 ft | 497 gal | 440 gal – 555 gal |
A 7 × 7 ft hot tub that stands 3 ft tall is a box of about 147 cubic feet — roughly 1,100 gallons if it were hollow. Real 7 × 7 tubs hold about 330–410. The rest is cabinet, insulation, the shell’s thickness, molded seats, loungers and the equipment bay. Seat layout matters too: Hot Spring lists a 7-seat and a 5-seat model on the same 8 ft 4 in × 7 ft 7 in footprint, both at 455 gallons.
How the estimate works
Instead of geometry, the calculator uses what hot tub makers publish. A straight line through the capacities of 18 square and rectangular tubs (table below) gives gallons ≈ 10.9 × outside footprint in sq ft − 200. Every listed tub falls within about 12% of that line, which is the range shown with your result.
gallons ≈ 10.9 × (outside length × width in feet) − 200 round tubs ≈ 8 × 3.1416 × (diameter ÷ 2)² litres = gallons × 3.785

Getting the exact number
- Spec sheet or manual. Search the model name; most makers list capacity in gallons and litres.
- Fill-line vs max fill. Bullfrog, for example, lists 368 gallons to the fill line and 508 to the brim for its A7L. Dose by the fill line.
- Measure the fill. A hose flow meter on the next refill gives the real figure for your tub at your water level.
Why the volume matters
Hot tub doses are small, and a 100-gallon error is 25–30% of the water. Chlorine, bromine, pH and alkalinity products give spoon measures per a set number of gallons; with the right volume you can scale them precisely in the hot tub chemical calculator. The CDC recommends at least 3 ppm of free chlorine or 4–8 ppm of bromine, pH 7.0–7.8 and water no hotter than 104°F (40°C).
What you’ll need
- Hot tub test strips (chlorine or bromine)Budget price
Hot tubs move faster than pools; a strip before each soak tells you whether the sanitizer is still there.

Screws onto the hose and counts gallons, so you know exactly how much went in — and your real fill rate.

A good cover keeps heat in and debris out. A waterlogged cover loses most of its insulation.

Frequently asked questions
How many gallons does a hot tub hold?
Most hard-shell hot tubs hold about 230–500 gallons; a typical 7 × 7 ft, 6-seat tub holds about 330–410. Two-person tubs and inflatables hold less, and big 8-seat tubs over 600. Your manual or spec sheet has the exact figure.
Why can’t I calculate hot tub gallons from length × width × depth?
Seats, loungers, footwells, the shell and insulated cabinet take up most of the box. A 7 × 7 × 3 ft tub is about 1,100 gallons as a box but holds about a third of that.
How many litres is a hot tub?
Multiply gallons by 3.785: a 350 gallon tub holds about 1,325 litres. Switch the calculator to metric for the estimate in litres.
How many gallons in an inflatable hot tub?
Published figures run from about 177 gallons (a 2–4 person tub with a 52 in inner diameter) to about 345 gallons for 5–7 person models. Inflatable tubs are mostly water inside, so the inner size matters more than the outer.
